"There are those who delude themselves into thinking that universities and publicly owned institutions don`t care about the bottom line. I know that they do. To say that English schools are not good places to work because they are for profit is fallacious. All institutions base decisions on the bottom line. Unfortunately, many university professors in Japan know exactly what I`m talking about. The money has to come from somewhere, even at publicly owned educational institutions. What matters more is who your boss is and do you agree with the educational philosophy of the institution in question." --Kevin Burns TEFL Journal

Kevin`s English
Schools: "The Canadian schools in Japan!" A small
chain of family owned schools in south-east Kanagawa. Sometimes small is better! You will not be a number at KES. The owners still teach so they know what it is like in the trenches. *This is my chain. Our teachers tend to stay for two or three years.--Kevin Kevin`s English Schools Forum: A lot of information about teaching English in Japan at this huge Yahoo Group. Many links to great resources for teachers and students. The top Yahoo Group in the Schools and Education--Japan Section. Dave`s ESL Cafe: Dave`s website is clearly a labour of love. Check it out! Jobs in Japan: Has many English teaching jobs and jobs of all kinds, plus a lot of links to what to do, especially in the Kanto area of Japan. ETJ: English Teachers in Japan: "Empowering learners and teachers" "I highly recommend this association."--Kevin Burns
ESL Teachers Board: Has many articles about teaching in Japan and abroad. and a huge section with employment ads. Highly recommended. ELT News: "The website for English teachers in Japan." A very pretty site. The articles are great. Subscribe to their free newsletter. Read the forums with a critical eye as they can be too negative about English schools. Some of the people there (the moderators included), seem to have had some bitter experiences at English Schools in Japan. But not all schools are bad of course. There are some very good ones. The articles are worth reading and there are quite a few jobs advertised. It has a good links section too. (Ohayo Sensei is the best for finding teaching positions in Japan though.) |

James English School: Teach in Northern Japan and Love It! "James seems like a good school that cares about
its teachers. I only
judge this from the philosophy stated on their homepage, which seems very different from the larger schools like NOVA etc. I can`t recall reading anything negative about working for James." --Kevin Burns

Japan English Teacher Bringing the most updated resources for teaching English and living in Japan. The English Resource: Has a jobs section and sells materials for English teaching. David English House I have attended a few lectures by David Paul and use many of his materials at my own chain of schools. David English House seems to keep teachers for a long time, and this shows that they must be a good school to work for. "I cannot at this time recommend any of the BIG
schools in Japan. Though there
are positive reports about them, overall I feel there are too many negative reports to list any of them here as good places to work. I recommend avoiding NOVA, GEOS, AEON, ECC and to a lesser extent Shane. I worked for ECC myself and so have some firiends. So I have direct experience there. ECC could be a pretty cold place to work and they don`t seem to like teachers staying longer than a few years. That is my impression based on the stories of good friends and my experience of working there. If you intend to work for an English school, find a small school or small chain that cares about its teachers." --Kevin Burns ********** |
